Why do Rankers fans idolise walttie Smith, when they couldn`t see the back of him quick enough in 1998?

He was sacked in all but name by davis Murray in 1998. I didn`t hear an outcry from the huns back then saying wattie must stay. Murrray must go. How did he become such a hero to the misguided?
