What unknown world did Achilles cross into in the Iliad?

Dead people cross the River Styx into the realm of Hades, sometimes called "House of Hades" in Greek myths. Achilles didn't die in the "Iliad" though. He was killed in a later poem that hasn't survived. Odysseus sees him in Hades realm in the "Odyssey".
